Megalithic Sites
There is much evidence of Stone Age man in the NE of Scotland and in particular this area, from long barrows, cairns and henges to recumbent stone circles. Many were built between 4000 to 15000 BC. The recumbent stone circles of the NE are very distinctive, with a massive recumbent slab in the south-western side flanked by two pillars, the tallest stones of the circle. The recumbent and its flankers frame the moon rising or setting in the southern sky, thus enabling useful lunar observations of broad seasonal change to be made by the small farming communities who built them. These circles, usually sited on the crests of hills or terraces with wide southerly views are considered to have been ritual centres.
